McIlroy’s victory came with a remarkable closing round of 6-under 65, propelling him to a five-shot win over Xander Schauffele. Despite a challenging start, where he trailed by two strokes, McIlroy’s consistent performance and strong finish underscored his dominance in the sport. His final score of 17-under 267 marked his second consecutive PGA Tour win, following a victory at the Zurich Classic with teammate Shane Lowry.
Reflecting on his win, McIlroy shared, “My golf swing feels a lot more comfortable than it has. Going to a venue next week where I’ve won, it feels like the stars are aligning a little bit.” His confidence is soaring as he heads to Kentucky for the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club, the site of his last major win a decade ago.
Schauffele, who led early in the final round, found himself unable to keep pace with McIlroy’s surge. After an eagle on the seventh, Schauffele’s lead slipped as McIlroy fired birdies on the eighth and ninth holes, and an impressive 33-foot eagle putt on the tenth gave him the lead. Schauffele commented, “When he’s on, he’s on. Hats off to him for winning. He played unbelievably well.”
The tournament also saw notable performances from other competitors. Byeong Hun An finished third at 9-under, while Jason Day and Sungjae Im tied for fourth. Meanwhile, Max Homa captured attention with a stunning eagle from the rough on the first hole.
McIlroy’s victory at Quail Hollow, a course he’s consistently excelled at, is a testament to his enduring skill and adaptability in the game. His achievement sets a new record at the Wells Fargo Championship, where no other player has won more than twice.
As McIlroy looks ahead to the PGA Championship, his recent successes provide him with momentum and a psychological edge. His triumph in Charlotte adds another memorable chapter to his storied career and positions him as a formidable contender for the upcoming major title.
