Nelly Korda’s Dominance Continues with Sixth Win of the Season

Nelly Korda’s 2024 LPGA season is shaping up to be one for the history books. At just 25 years old, Korda secured her sixth victory of the year at the Mizuho Americas Open, held at Liberty National in Jersey City, New Jersey. This impressive win puts her in elite company, as only the fourth player in LPGA history to achieve at least six wins before June. The others? Legends Babe Zaharias (1951), Louise Suggs (1953), and Lorena Ochoa (2008).

Korda’s journey to this milestone wasn’t without its challenges. Despite struggling on the front nine and carding a two-over 37, she bounced back with a one-under 71 in the final round, narrowly edging out Hannah Green by one stroke to finish at 14 under par.

“I feel like you never have your A-game throughout an entire tournament,” Korda remarked. “You kind of have to grind through it even with your B, C, and D game. I definitely felt like I had my C and D game today.”

This win marks Korda’s 14th LPGA victory, with nearly half coming in just eight starts this season. Her performance ties her with the longest win streak in LPGA history, alongside Nancy Lopez (1978) and Annika Sorenstam (2004-05).

“Oh, my gosh, six,” Korda exclaimed. “I can’t even really gather myself right now with that.”

Sunday’s final round was a nail-biter. Korda began with a two-stroke lead, but early bogeys allowed Green to catch up. The duo matched birdies on the 10th, 13th, and 15th holes, entering the final hole tied at 14 under. Green’s mishit drive on the 18th landed her in the rough, while Korda calmly secured her par, clinching the victory after Green’s par putt missed.

Green, who won the JM Eagle LA Championship and the HSBC Women’s World Championship this year, acknowledged Korda’s prowess, saying, “To lose to Nelly kind of like is sad, but then it’s also Nelly Korda. You know, she’s obviously so dominant right now. To feel like second behind her is quite nice.”

With the LPGA season in full swing, Korda will take a brief respite before gearing up for the U.S. Women’s Open starting May 30. Reflecting on the upcoming major, Korda shared, “I feel like that is, out of all the events, the event for me. It’s where my dream kind of became reality. So just going to stay in my bubble that week and take it a shot at a time.”

With her current form, Korda’s seventh win might just be around the corner.
